Northern Amber Bumble Bee (Bombus borealis)Observer
afraserDescription
Bumble bee buzz pollinating rose. This is an example of a plant-pollinator interaction. In the audio recording you can hear the bee switching between its low flight buzz as it moves between fliers to a high pitched buzz when standing on the flower. This high pitched buzz stimulates the flower to release pollen from the anthers. The bee then spreads that pollen to other rose flowers it visits and picks up more pollen to take back to its colony to help feed developing larvae.

Found a number of these in our summer cottage. I was hoping they might be parasitoids of the European earwig as our earwig numbers in the house are much lower this year. I found some info on Spathius as a parasitoid of emerald ash borer was first observed in the Maritimes in 2018.
