Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer)

Observer

amuni003

Date

November 15, 2015

Description

Pituophis catenifer deserticola

As we were leaving the James Reserve, we found this gopher snake in a dirt, slightly shrub-like area off to the side of the freeway. It tried to pretend to be a rattlesnake by flattening its head, coiling up, and "rattling" its tail. It was a slightly cloudy day with some wind. The temperature was around the low 60s (Fahrenheit).
