Small herbaceous plant. Slender, green stems have alternately-arranged leaves that travel up the stem, which ends in a single flower. The leaves are stalkless, slender and lobed/coarsely toothed. Flower has numerous green sepals and numerous white petals. The flower itself is approximately 1.25 inches across. The petals surround a 1/3 inch wide yellow central structure that includes the reproductive organs. The ovary is superior and the whole flower is radially symmetric.

Located outside the Garrett Seminary. Alongside many other yews, made into sculpted bushes. Approximately 3 feet tall. Multiple trunks per bush. Brown/grey rough bark. Flat, pointy needles that are continuous with the twig - twig is green like needles.

Norway Spruce (Picea abies)Observer

Tree located near the northern point of the lakefill (near the athletic fields on the east side). Tree is approximately 20-25 feet tall with a trunk approximately 1 foot in diameter. Bark is rough at the bottom and grey. Short (less than 2 cm), singular, pointed green needles attach to stem by a short woody peg. Needles have a square cross section.

Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana)Observer

Tree located at the Lakefill. Tree is 25-30 feet tall and is found in a clump of multiple junipers and juniper bushes. Grey, rough bark. All needles are scaled and form 3D clusters (not fan-shaped). Green-blue-grey round fruit present all over the tree.

Tree located at the Lakefill, near the southern point. Tree is 45-50 feet tall with a furrowed, rough grey trunk that is approximately 1.5 feet in diameter. Needles are long (approximately 5 inches), pointed, green, and found in clumps of two, connected to the branch by a short woody stalk.

Dotted Hawthorn (Crataegus punctata)Observer

Tree located at the Lakefill, near the southern point, in a cluster of other hawthorns. Tree is approximatly 12 feet tall and is about as wide as it is tall. Branches/Twigs are armed with smooth, stiff thorns that are 2-4 cm in length. Trunk is grey/brown and rough, with a significant amount of lichen growing on both the trunk and branches. Red buds on the twigs were unopened at the time of observation. Some clumps of shriveled red fruit present at time of observation.
June 1 observation: leaves are bright green, 5-7 cm long and about 3 cm wide. The widest point of the leaf is towards the tip. Small serrations along the leaf. Flowers are getting ready to open - small, white in an influorescence at twig termini.

Tree is approximately 13 feet tall, consisting of 9 clumped trunks (each no more than 2.5 inches wide). Peeling bark that is white and papery; smooth; red underneath the peeling bark. Dark brown, flexible twigs with buds alternately arranged. Short and long shoots. Imbricate bud scales. Horizontal lenticels. At the time of observation, some buds were beginning to open.
On May 31st: leaves emerge in 2's from short shoots of branches from year before. Green, slightly pubescent shoots growing from twig termini. Leaves are serrated and green. Catkins are coming out.

Large herbaceous plant. Monocot. Large (1-1.5 ft), parallel-veined, green basal leaves. One, approximately 4 ft tall hollow stem supports a baseball-sized globose influorescence. Flowers are small and purple. Flowers have six united petals and six stamens. Three-parted superior ovary with a single pistil. One flower per flower stem. All flower stems originate at one point at the end of the stalk of the influorescence.

Small herbaceous plant that seems to have a slight trailing characteristic. Long shoots with oppositely arranged leaves. Leaves are small (2-3 cm), slightly leathery, shiny green on top. Flower is purple-blue color, with 5 united parts that form a funnel shape near the base. Yellowish interior. 5 small green sepals; 5 short stamens. SIngle pistil.

Leaves are separated into three leaflets that look loke a whorl. Leaflets are small (1 cm or less) and green with a pale green crescent going from one side to the other. Influorescences are on a stem - many flowers per influorescence (umbel). Flowers are very small and white. Flowers are four-parted, with one upper petal, two side petals, and an inner petal protecting the reproductive organs.

Flower is facing downward with 5 red sepals that have upward-facing projections. 5 yellow pedals are circular in shape and found within the sepals. Many yellow stamens. Radially symmetric flower.

Very large tree, approximately 60 feet tall with a 1.5-2 foot wide trunk. Rough, grey bark (shallow furrows) with red/brown inner bark. Lichen on bark. Trunk flare at bottom. Alternately arranged pinnately compound leaves. Leaflets do not exceed 3-4 cm. Stout, stiff, sharp dark red/brown thorns on trunk and upper branches. Large canopy; branches start half way up the tree (out of reach).

Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana)Observer

Tree, approximately 12 feet tall, with a single 6-8 inch trunk. Bark is smooth and grey. Leaves are alternately arranged, yet clumped relatively close together. The widest point of the leaf is more than half way down, and there is a small point and the end of each leaf. The underside of the leaves are very slightly pubescent. Twigs rough and not too flexible. Large, showy flowers cover the tree when it is in full flower. At the time of observation, only a few flowers remained. Flowers are large, showy, white with a streak of pink. Green projections remain where flowers once were (see images).

Shoerter needles born on top of twigs while longer ones go out to the side. New needles growing out in clusters near twig termini. No cones found. Twigs flexible.

Tree, approximately 10 feet tall. Numerous slender trunks. Opposite leaf arrangement, small serrations, more pale green and fuzzy on the underside. Bark is dark brown and only slightly rough. Twigs are very flexible with a fuzziness that can easily be rubbed off with the finger. Buds valvate and light brown, pubescent. Influorescences with small white flowers.

Woody shrub, approximately 3.5 feet tall. Bark and twigs are smooth dark brown, unarmed. Leaves are alternately arranged, thick, shiny on top and matte on the bottom; leaf edges are wavy, with coarse serrations that end as stiff spines. Flowers are very small and are present in bundles at the ends of twigs. 5 flower petals that are white with small pink spots at the tips of the petals. 5 stamens. Superior green ovary.

Tree, approximately 15 feet tall. Two main trunks, slender (approximately 4-5 inches thick). Bark is smooth and grey-brown on the trunk and branches, but turns green near the newer branches/twigs. Bark near the base of the trunks has a verticle "cracked" look that is a light brown. Leaves are oppositely arranged, palmate, deeply lobed, red with serrations. Twigs are slightly flexible near the terminus. Unopened buds are small and red with imbricate scales. Flowers are small, red, and just beginning to open.

Small herb with narrow, lobed leaves that radiate out from a central root. Reddish vein runs from base to tip of each leaf. Lobes on the leaves are sharp, but not prickly. Yellow flower with many very small petals, each on their own hollow stalk coming from the center of the plant.
