A friend of mine was doing some gardening in downtown Lompoc after 2 days of heavy rains. He was digging up some tall grass and underneath in the dirt there were 10-20 small salamanders that appeared to be eating ants. They were 2 1/2 to 4 inches long with dark slimy skin. I was very surprised to see so many, and in such a rural location.
