Description

Approximately 20 ft tall deciduous tree. Light grey, rough, vertically fibrous bark. Leaves are alternate, lanceolate shaped (4 inches long, 1/2 inch wide). Leaves are shiny green on the tops and the appear almost white in colour underneath. In the sun the leaves look silvery in colour. Small round, light green fruit (1/2 inch in diameter) in clusters or 1-3. 1 inch long thorns sparsely spread out along branches.

Description

Coniferous tree, 20-30ft tall, dark green needles, opposite branching, whorling needle patterns, smooth grey/brown bark with bubbles (containing tree sap) under the surface. Light brown cones, cones approximately 5 inches long 1-2 inches in diameter. Found on September 19th at approximately 4:30 pm in the green space between parking lot E and university drive on the University of Lethbridge campus.

Small (1 cm in diameter) round bodied beetle, with bright red abdomen covers. The body colour under the red covers is black. 3 distinct spots on either half of abdomen and one being split by the separation line closer to head. The head is tucked close to body with two small antennae.
