Purple Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea)Observer

These photos of a foxglove plant in our backyard are notable for showing in known foxglove blossom mutation known as “pelorism.” It was known to Linnaeus, Charles Darwin, and other naturalists. Look up “pelorism” on Wikipedia to learn about this mutation. The fourth photo shows what I believe is another peloric blossom developing on a side branch of the same plant. Keep an eye out for foxglove plants to see if you can find other examples.

Found beneath back patio door light, just barely alive. Named for the color of the spots and edgings on the wings; the hind wings are mostly cinnabar in color. The species was introduced to the United States to help control ragweed, on which the larvae feed.
