What

Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos)

Observer

dcoleman

Date

May 15, 2015

Description

This beautiful organism was caught for observations right beside a small runoff pond. There seemed to be bountiful numbers of this specimen's relatives around, but this was the only one that we were nimble enough to catch. It flew in distinctive patterns when the wind was blowing to maintain direction, which was a neat observation for my partner and I. We believed it was a Northern Crescent but would still like someone to check out our work. It was a sunny day, with slight winds. The location was slightly wet and had plentiful resources around.

What

Golden-backed Snipe Fly (Chrysopilus thoracicus)

Observer

dcoleman

Date

May 12, 2015

Description

This Golden-Backed Snipe fly was found only a few meters from a gravel track at the Louisa County High School. No other specimens of this kind were examined through our observations on this day. It was flying close to a group of honeysuckle bushes. Conformation on this specimen would be appreciated. The most tell tale markings on it is the yellow spot on its back. Unfortunately, one of its wings is gone after an incident with one of my previous observations, the Calico Pennant.

Description

This specimen has been unofficially identified as a Red-banded Hairstreak. It was found in a small plateau area next to a small runoff pond. The pictures are taken through the lens of a microscope to show the color patterns on the wings. This should help with further identification. The taxonomy for this is thought to be;

What

Forest Tent Caterpillar Moth (Malacosoma disstria)

Observer

dcoleman

Date

May 12, 2015

Description

In the pictures, I believe that we have identified a Forest Tent Caterpillar. This was found in a low wooded area, with slightly wet conditions. Many caterpillars were around but this seemed to be one of a few around of its species. It was a warm day and much of the local wildlife was around. Out beside the Louisa County High School, this was a find dedicated to research. An identification or conformation on this species would be appreciated.

Animalia
Arthropoda
Insecta
Lepidoptera
