Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)Observer
dgeorgeDescription
Seen walking along a cultured grass area in a sub-development near a curb. The history of the area is a former golf course 20+ years ago. Multiple ponds and mixed wildlife. Found heading away from one local pond which was quite a distance away. Seemed alert, and healthy. Clear eyes, nose and mouth. All limbs intact with nails. No damage to shell. Maybe 6” in length. The DC Metro card is for size reference. I gently turned it on it’s side to get a quick snap of the underside and then put it back upright and left. There is red highlights on the shell on the inside and on the rims. Discoloration on the shell is dried mud and algae. From personal research, may be a male due to front claw length?

Eastern Ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis)Observer
dgeorgeDescription
Found in road. Approx 3 feet in length. Was occasionally writhing but tongue was not tasting air. Bite/puncture marks visible on belly and can be seen in photos. Bite was maybe 2 inches wide if that. Coloring was brownish grey with dark/black blotches. The underbelly was whitish/cream. The snake was iridescent and milky colored very slightly in some places so perhaps was nearing shedding.
