Description

Adult bald eagle flying approximately 4 miles SW of Kellogg, Minnesota. Also 2 adult and 1 juvenile wild bald eagles along Mississippi River outside National Eagle Center. Second photo is rehabilitated bald eagle inside center which is a great place to visit and learn about eagles nationaleaglecenter.org

Description

Old shell fragment consisting of several outside scutes. Scrape marks on edges of shell may be from predator or rodent teeth. Not sure if hole in shell is from canine. Occasional holes in ground in general area suggest continued occupation by gopher tortoises. Grassland and oak hammock.

Approximately 2.5 inches long. Nasal bones broken off at front. Using Mark Elbroch's Animal Skulls - A Guide to North American Species, identified as gray squirrel (Sciurus) by backward pointing tip above eye socket. Remote location not likely to have eastern gray squirrel.

Brushy areas with black sage, Felsman Loop, Bishop Peak Natural Reserve. Large leaves alternate, brown and curling up, flower heads at top mostly going to seed, a few light purple petals still present.

This is the blue version of scarlet pimpernel which usually has orange flowers. Location is a pasture on a ranch, not a garden, thus plant is naturalized. A Santa Clara University professor is looking for locations of the blue version in Santa Clara County, CA.
