Pictured is a small Sitka spruce from the Evergreen campus. These trees are usually large, up to 70 m tall. Has large drooping branches. Has very sharp needles that can be up to 3 cm long. Pollen cones are red in color and seed cones thin and cylinder like, between 5-8 cm long.

Licorice Fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza)Observer

Very small fern that usually grows in bunches on tree trunks or branches. Called the licorice fern because of the licorice flavored rhizome. It is once pinnate and has leaflets that are longer than 3 cm. grows in wet, mossy ground, if not on tree trunks, near down trees and logs.

Very large, can grow up to 70 m tall. Has yellowish green needles that are flat. Usually 2-3 cm long. Bark is very thick, ridged and dark brown in color.

Diagnostic characteristics of the red alder include thin bark that is grey in color. Most noticeable are the white patches on the trunk with patches of lichens. Has alternating leaves that have sharp points and stay green until they drop off in late fall

This was observed on the Evergreen campus. Characteristics include a hollow stem. The internodes of the main branches are longer than the stem sheath. The jointed stem is also very noticeable. I found that wherever this plant was growing, it was very abundant.

Observed on the Evergreen campus. Leaves were dark brown to purple in color. Palmately branched and does not contain as many leaves compared to other species of fern.

Observed at the Evergreen state college campus. Identifying characteristics include 5-9 leaflets per leaf. The leaves have one central vein and are glossy on top. Found usually in more open areas along the coast.

Observed in the Evergreen forest. Identifying characteristics include thick leathery leaves that are evergreen colored. Leaves are between 5-10 cm long and are finely toothed. Most commonly found at medium elevations in coniferous forests out tot he seashore.

Western Redcedar (Thuja plicata)Observer

Observed in the Evergreen Forest near the Evergreen State College campus. Identifying characteristics of this tree include the large branches that droop slightly before curving upward into a ‘J’ shape. The bark has grey outer coloring that transitions to reddish brown color on the inside. Bark commonly known for peeling off in long fibrous strips off the trunk.

Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum)Observer

Observed in the Evergreen Forest near the Evergreen State College. This Fern has alternate once pinnate leaves. Dense in the under story of the forest. The sori are large. round and can be located halfway between the margin and the mid vein.
