What
Apples (Genus Malus)Observer
ebocDescription
I believe this is a "wild" multiflora rose. It was growing between the large man-made bolders that make up a break wall at the Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo, NY. Lake Erie is the water in the background of this photo.
What
Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)Observer
ebocDescription
A Canada goose gosling swimming in the pond at an Audubon nature center. The other goslings and parents were very nearby.
What
American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)Observer
ebocDescription
A painted lady butterfly was enjoying the flowers and some attention at a local nursery where I bought my plants this weekend.
What
Yellow Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum)Observer
ebocDescription
I discovered this little flower under a tree in a wooded area of an urban cemetery. I'm quite sure it's a native but it's not a ladyslipper and I didn't see it on the list of native orchids (New York State). UPDATE: a community member assisted with identifying this species so I updated.
What
Ferns (Class Polypodiopsida)Observer
ebocDescription
Taken in my garden. I did not purchase or plant these ferns but I don't know if they are naturally occurring because the previous owner might have planted them. They do become dormant very quickly in summer if they do not receive enough water. They grow to be about 16".
