What

Apples (Genus Malus)

Observer

Date

May 23, 2015

Description

I believe this is a "wild" multiflora rose. It was growing between the large man-made bolders that make up a break wall at the Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo, NY. Lake Erie is the water in the background of this photo.

What

Yellow Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum)

Observer

eboc

Date

May 8, 2015

Description

I discovered this little flower under a tree in a wooded area of an urban cemetery. I'm quite sure it's a native but it's not a ladyslipper and I didn't see it on the list of native orchids (New York State). UPDATE: a community member assisted with identifying this species so I updated.

What

Ferns (Class Polypodiopsida)

Observer

eboc

Date

May 21, 2015

Description

Taken in my garden. I did not purchase or plant these ferns but I don't know if they are naturally occurring because the previous owner might have planted them. They do become dormant very quickly in summer if they do not receive enough water. They grow to be about 16".
