Meadow Spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius)

Observer

erikweiss101

April 16, 2012

Description

This spittlebug larvae was nestled deep within a patch of grass. It is small and yellow and it constantly secreted a large amount of "spittle" onto the leaf that it had been resting on as well as the hand of our guide who pointed the bug out to us.

Date

Description

I observed this earlier and I had the misconception that this was Poison Oak. After some research, I have concluded that this is most likely Virginia Creeper, a plant that looks similar to Poison Oak.

What

Broad-footed Mole (Scapanus latimanus)

Observer

erikweiss101

Date

April 16, 2012

Description

Here is a recently deceased mole. It is shown here next to a U.S quarter to show its relative size. The mole had dark grey fur and light peach colored tail and paws. The mole had long, but not too sharp looking claws and a tiny pink nose. The mole's snout appeared to have a somewhat curved shape. There was barely and blood on the mole, and Rigor Mortis had not set in.

What

Cabbages and Mustards (Genus Brassica)

Observer

erikweiss101

Date

April 16, 2012

Description

I observed this flower during an in-class field trip to explore and take observations of the grassy area surrounding Montgomery High. This flower was a a little bit away from where the rest of our class had been exploring, but we decided to explore because we had not seen any other flowers of the same kind growing anywhere else in the area. The flower's petals were a bright yellow, and the inside was a yellowish green color. The flower was growing in a very wet and somewhat muddy area right next to a piece of wood with barbed wire wrapped around it.
** Added note: I have added a second picture of the flower to possibly aide in the Identification
