Date

October 4, 2016 04:29 PM EDT

Description

Tall plant with long wood like stem and yellow flowers that grow in clusters (all of these are distinguishing characteristics for this plant) Around a meter and a half in height. What

True Hoppers (Suborder Auchenorrhyncha)

Observer

gabriel_thompson

Date

October 4, 2016 04:26 PM EDT

Description

Adolescent insect resting on a plant. At first thought to be a moth but then when disturbed hopped away just as its adult version distinctly does. Possibly a cricket because of chirping sound heard near it but could not confirm that it was the source.

What

Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii)

Observer

gabriel_thompson

Date

October 4, 2016 04:18 PM EDT

Description

Ground level shrub with bunches of small red berries on branches typical of honeysuckles. While I am unsure, I believe it is the invasive bush honeysuckle because of the appearance of its leaves. It was growing along the side of a path and was the only one in its area.

What

Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)

Observer

gabriel_thompson

Date

September 29, 2016 05:23 PM EDT

Description

Squirrel with grey colored coat that was foraging under and around the base of a pine tree. Would hide under the tree if I got to close so it was hard to get a very close picture. Would constantly stop its foraging to look and listen for potential threats.

What

Hickories (Genus Carya)

Observer

gabriel_thompson

Date

September 7, 2016 06:48 PM EDT

Description

Sapling of some sort of oak tree, possibly of the one nearby, that demonstrates decay in its leaves from either disease, parasites, or insects. Growing in a shady part of the forest with large leaves for its relatively small stock and branches.

What

Perching Birds (Order Passeriformes)

Observer

gabriel_thompson

Date

September 7, 2016 06:53 PM EDT

Description

Grey bird with dark crest. Saw cleaning it's plumage and catching nearby bugs. Hard to identify because it was resting in a thick tree with dead branches and would fly higher as it was approached. Two to three of these birds were spotted in the same tree. Possibly an eastern wood-pewee or some other type of flycatcher.

Young tree that demonstrates opposite branching pattern and has diamond shaped bark. Most likely some sort of Ash tree. Found on the edge of a shady forest surrounded by shrubs and bushes.

What

Eastern Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)

Observer

gabriel_thompson

Date

September 7, 2016 07:09 PM EDT

Description

Tree observed to have round and green walnuts on branches and alternate branching patterns.
Tree was found somewhat isolated in the forest compared to the dense foliage in the surrounding area. Should signs of seasonal change as it had begun to drop its walnuts and some of its leaves.
