For the Backyard bird count, I counted many starlings, as well as blackbirds. These birds were seen outside the Library window, facing towards Stewart Building. The birds were flying among cabbage trees. As I was inside the Library, I heard no birds within the first five minutes. The picture provided has 4 song thrush birds all resting on the cabbage trees.

Went to Riccarton bush, along the Kahikatea Loop Track, and saw a variety of birds, including 7 blackbirds, 1 fantail, 2 house sparrows and 1 kereru. All of these were seen after 5 minutes. I also heard many birds both before and after 5 minutes. I could not get many good photos, as all the birds were flying high up in the canopy of Kahikatea trees, and those that were foraging on the ground, flew away too quickly.

Yellow Admiral (Vanessa itea)Observer
grace94Description
For the ECOL202 Butterfly assignment, I went to the Liffey Domain which is a wild place. Within 20 minutes, I saw one Yellow Admiral which was flying less than 10 metres away. I also observed 3 Monarch Butterflies and 5 Common Cabbage White butterflies over 10 metres away, which were flying among the vegetation. I was unable to get any photos of the butterflies, as they were either too flighty or too far away to get a decent photo.

We walked through the Kahikatea Loop Track, in Riccarton Bush, to look for butterflies in a 'wild' location, as part of the Ecol202 Butterfly mission. However, we did not find any sightings of butterflies after 20 minutes. The photo shows what type of native forest we were walking through while looking for the butterflies.

Found this insect on the first day of walking the Humpride Track, Tuatapere, while we were climbing up the hardest part of the hill. We found it before we reached Stag Point. I was wondering if anyone could please identify it? I found it along the main track, among leaf litter that made it appear camouflaged, but I noticed it beside my boot as I was climbing up a step.
