South facing, full sun, recently disturbed ground. One of these has also grown in my balcony garden for the past couple years. The plant here is only 6-8 inches tall and growing by itself (sole specimen). The one on my balcony is under a foot tall and also a single specimen.

Our guide called the plant flowing in the water "mermaid's hair" but it doesn't look like like Proserpinaca palustris to me. This was growing in the Orde Stillwater in Kejimkujik National Park, up by the visitor centre.
