-hard outer shell
-about 5 inches wide
-5 small tiny teeth in the center
-charcoal gray shell
-different length spikes (get up to 2 inches) ends are purple

Justicia brandegeana
-grows in clumps of weak twiggy stems
-3-5 ft.
-end of stems have 6in red bract that encloses a white flower
-oval, light green leaves
-younger stems are soft as well as the undersides of their leaves
-pleasant smell

Pinus taeda L.
-straight trunk clear of branches
-reddish brown bark
-very tall
-oval cones (light brownish-gray) have little spikes at the end of the scale
-small, dense, single-winged seeds
-skinny yellow-green pine needles about 9 in.
-bark: irregular, large plates
