these cortinarius speices was growing under pines near the washington coast. in sandy soil among dune grasses and mosses. the dark brown umbo has dulled out with drying and the cap is smooth. the rough stalk is twisty and fibrous. the youngee specimena have there cortina completely in tact and the oldest specimen's cap is nearly planed out and its gills are dusted with rusty orange/brown spores.

found a few of these mushrooms evenly spaced around the bases of bracken ferns. sprouting just out of the duff and mostly growing as couplets. the freshest looking ones were a darker tan color with a brown flower-like pattern on the cap with dark brown/black bruising on the gills.
