Most of these are textbook m. fasciculatus but a group of 10 or so look like m. fasciculatus-davidsonii hybrids or actual m. davidsonii. Worth studying.
Location is north-facing slope 20 yards north of Conover-Doty Rd intersection. One group of 30, one group of 10, and one lone individual in the area dropping away from the fire road.

These appear to be intermediates between m. fasciculatus and m. davidsonii. Location: Sombrero Canyon N-NW to southern end of ridge between Sombrero and Hog canyons. 500 individuals in scattered clusters, higher density in the flatter southernmost portion of distribution. Wide variation in leaf size and shape, vast majority not fuzzy enough to be Davidsons. Location is 1000 m west of a population of m. davidsonii and both populations are blooming as of August - somewhat late for local m. fasciculatus - so they might be worth a study for possible hybridizing/intermediates. Better map of distribution is in my CalFlora entry for this observation date (Kristin Sabo).

1000 individuals. Much sparser distribution compared to east side of Dillon Divide, likely the same seed source (Mendenhall Ridge) that were carried down by Sand Fire heat and wind (July 2016).

Huge expansion of this population due to the Sand Fire (July 2016). Prior determinations counted 5 adult plants in this immediate area. Seeds likely came from population near top of Mendenhall Ridge. Mainly scattered but some high density areas on flatter stable patches of land. Pics demonstrate distribution - generally between Burma Rd (3N37), Dillon Divide, the Pinnacle, and Indian Springs. .

Stimulated by the Sand Fire, this group of m. davidsonii have expanded significantly - area populated is 10x previous, numbers have increased from 20 adults to thousands of young plants. Scattered plants along both sides of road except down in the drainages running to the north where there are very large thick groups of young plants among burned/recovering scrub oak (see photos).

5000 individuals.
Sand Fire (July 2016) completely burned this area - fire stimulated this population. 15% of plants are 1 year old, 85% of plants are this year's sprouts.
Threats: As of the time of this writing, California High Speed Rail has a proposed route through this area: they may build tunnels and surface infrastructure through this location.
