Missing DateDescription
A neighbor found this imprint in the snow, where a bird descended on some (probably subnivian) creature. The glove in the second photo is 11 inches long from cuff to longest finger, so from the bird's tail to the leading edge of the outstretched wing was about 9 inches. The observer saw the marks in the afternoon and thinks it was a daytime strike.
What
White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)Observer
maeveDescription
A Jericho resident sent this photo. We think it's a white-breasted nuthatch, with the darker tones a result of light or camera setting.
What
Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus)Observer
maeveDescription
I've been clearing out old photos and found this one - and I'm not sure what it is! It was in the little Nature Sanctuary in the Jekyll Island Campground.

I'm not sure if this is one organism or more than one. It was lying under one of our currant bushes.

What
Broad-leafed Helleborine (Epipactis helleborine)Observer
maeveDescription
This all-yellow plant attracted our attention. It grew in the woods, next to a path, and appeared to be all pale yellow - no green or any other color. The whole thing was about 4" tall. Bernie took two photos, one with flash.
What
Ground-Ivy (Glechoma hederacea)Observer
maeveDescription
This plant was being visited by several bumble bees.

What
Colubrid Snakes (Family Colubridae)Observer
maeveDescription
The snake skin was in the grass near the parking lot. I picked it up and put it on one of the informational signs to photograph it.
What
Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)Observer
maeveDescription
I'm pretty sure this is a Cooper's Hawk rather than a Sharp-shinned because of the flat head.
What
Live-Forever (Genus Hylotelephium)Observer
maeveDescription
A neighbor says this is cropping up all over her garden and wants to know what it is.
What
Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)Observer
maeveDescription
Shape, overall color, eye color, bill shape, size all add up to Red-winged Blackbird. But I stared at this bird through binoculars for several minutes and never saw even a hint of any color but black.

What
Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio)Observer
maeveDescription
I took this photo at Outreach for Earth Stewardship. A few years later, I labeled it Long-eared Owl but now I'm thinking it's a red-morph Eastern Screech Owl. However, the second photo, with Craig Newman's hand, suggests a larger bird so now I'm baffled.
What
Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)Observer
maeveDescription
Two feathers seen close to each other - This one looks like the Wild Turkey feather on The Feather Atlas.
