What

Oats (Genus Avena)

Description

Pretty sure I misidentified this plant as well. However, this is certainly a grass and my best guess is that it is in the bromus family.

Fun fact: If it is a part of the bromus family then it is high in silica content.

I'm pretty sure I misidentified the exact species, although I'm sure it is a thistle.

From exploring the internet, I believe this to be a purple nutsedge. Notice the large flowering rod extending out of it, although it is dead.

What

Hairy Vetch (Vicia villosa)

Date

Description

Hairy vetches all over the place.

From what I have read online, this purple flower plant is an invasive species from Europe and Asia. I saw a bumblebee pollinate some of the vetches in this hill photo.

What

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

Observer

Date

Description

For the most part, the common California Poppy with some weeds intertwined. This site is a hillside behind our AP Environmental classroom. I believe: the purple flowers are called bird vetch, the clovers with yellow flowers are oxalis, the weed to be a prickly sow thistle and the grass to be nutsedge. Any thoughts?
