I heard it before I saw it- characteristic nasal call. I saw it on a large silk oak tree in a riparian area. I have never seen nuthatches in this area and wouldn't expect to- not many trees in the area due to Cedar and other fires (there are some oaks in riparian areas over the hill to the east but not near homes), and the trees that are here are mostly non-native eucalyptus, palms, and pines.
