These fuzzy abdomen covered insects were found on two young beech trees. Several hundred were gathered, all rocking their abdomens back and forth, with dripping liquid from them, forming the fuzz that is in the picture. Beech bark insect????

I need a little help on this one. I thought it was some variety of phlox, but am having trouble pinpointing it. The toothed margins of the flowers are throwing me for a loop. Leaves are opposite with parallel veins. Found in a meadow like edge of forrest, next to yarrow. Any ideas?

Around 10 PM I heard a sound that is very close to the winnowing call of a common snipe. But I believe this is a shorebird and I heard the call in central Vermont in a forest area with meadows and vernal pools abounding, but certainly no shore. Any help??
