What

Opalescent Nudibranch (Hermissenda opalescens)

Date

May 29, 2017 07:23 AM PDT

Description

Just a nice shot. The Intertidal area of Seal Rock has changed drastically over the last 4 years. Sand has accumulated and then been removed several times, leaving the low zone open real estate for larval recruitment. It will be interesting to see how the community develops with the much reduced seastar population!

A rare find, the delicious Cauliflower Mushroom!!!! Yippeee! Be careful when harvesting and you can return every year to pick it again, REMEMBER - Commercial mushroom harvesting is illegal in a Wilderness Area and you are not allowed to pick more than 1 gallon for personal use, in Washington it's 5 gallons. With this find, you're pretty much at the limit : )

What

Pacific Hairy Hermit Crab (Pagurus hirsutiusculus)

Date

August 15, 2016

Description

Ever wonder why hermit crabs need a snail shell to hide in? Check out their little naked bootie! Actually their abdomen, this species is more likely to jump out of their shell when picked up and this guy was sitting right next to its molt. A good reason to NOT buy shells while on vacation is, mollusks are so scarce in some places that the hermits have to find a suitable piece of garbage!
