For the past few days, three or four (juvenile, I think) cuckoos have been calling seemingly to one another in a Silver Birch tree, just prior to sunset. This evening, as I approached with my camera two flew away, but I took a blurry photo of one of the remaining birds.
I was wondering, is it common at this time of year for small groups of juvenile cuckoos to come together, to feed and gain strength, prior to migration?

Location is a semi rural lifestyle garden. There are several kowhai and exotic deciduous trees in bud. Period of drizzle during a rainy morning. Solitary kereru perched after eating perhaps. Several riroiro warblers were in the vicinity. A shining cuckoo was heard in the garden a week ago.
