Description

this mushroom was found in varying sizes in a fairy ring.

Spore print light brown to buff, cap flesh yellow brown to cinnamon brown. gills are cinnamon brown to orange brown, stipe surface cinnamon brown. flesh, tawny brown.

Cap slimy, smooth, with cracks in zonate margin. shape is convex in young to plane when old, with a highly wavy margin. Gills are decurrent, with an inrolled edge. margin of cap is uplifted to wavy, flesh is fleshy.

spores are smooth, aproxamately 4um x 1um. football shaped with a indent near where attached to basidia. Cap structural cells filamentous.

Description

This russula always grows next to dandiloions. It was found in a coastal forest. The spore print was white, width of cap up to 5 cm. the stem and flesh are all white, but the surface of the cap is zonate, with black in the middle, gradating to a dark purple to even red around the margins. stipe is brittle, and breaks like chalk.

Spores are 5 um x 2.5 um, and kidney shaped. There are two lipid droplets in this spore. When doing a gill smash, cystidia were found, they are oval shaped and wrinkled.

Description

this bolete was a sight to behold, my heart aflutter as i thought of the stew I would make of it. It was fairly typical of the genus, Large light brown to buff cap, with white pore surface Stem large, bulbous and cream colored, with fine reticulation around the edge of the cap. Didn't get good spore information, but it tasted dammed good!

this specimen was found growing off the cut side of a downed doug fir. they were mostly green in color and highly zonate, with rings of red, orange and brown, and cream also present.

Very clustered growth form. flesh consistancy brittle to spongey.

Description

this conspicious corpinus was found on the organic farm trail. the cap is yellow to orange near the top with many deep striations. along the striations there are golden flecks, giving it it's micaceus name. flesh is yellow to yellow buff throughout. the gills are autodigesting. growing out of a cut stump.

Description

This boletoid was found growing in a swampy transition zone between costal grassland and coastal forest.

Cap surface yellow to orange brown, cap flesh light yellow to cream. Pore layer a bright yellow, bruising blue when handled. stem surface is yellow to orange, flesh color orange to cream. stem flesh bruising blue-green color. taste very mild, sime veil present. flesh consistancy spongey, cap surface very greasy or slimy. cap shape convex.

Stem shape is tapered at apex, texture is viscid. the stem is vaugely purinose, with reticulation near the apex. slimy annulus present. but washed away on some specimens, especially those in deeper waters.

Spores not obtained because specimen became mess instead of printing spores...

Description

Up to 5cm tall, cap 2.5 cm at widest point. Odor and taste mild. top of cap orange brown, to red orange. cap flesh is creammy to orange-buff. gills and stipe are lilac! Cap oramentation is smooth to pubescent. cap shape convex, with a straight margin. Margin has some striations, which run up the margin of the cap. consistancy fleshy. Spores are 5 um x 1.5 um, shaped like a cat's eye. brown to light color.

Description

A. muscaria, in it's typical form, bright red cap, white free gills, with white flesh and stem.

Spore print white to creamy, specimens were of varying ages and sizes, the biggest up to 26cm tall.

Universal veil remnants on the cap and at the bottom of the stipe. annulus present nearer to the cap than the base.

Description

This mushroom was found growing grouped under a layer of moss from a downed tree. Spore Print white to creamy

Height of entire specemin: 7-8cm.

Odor is strong, like feet.

Taste unplesant. also like stinky feet.

Cap surface is brown to light brown, with white pittings near the center. flesh is white to cream, darkening slowly from tehtime of picking.

Stipe surface is brown to white, ligher color is present apical from the annuus, the basal protion of the stipe is brown, and ornamented with light brown scabers. Stipe consistancy is fibrous, and solid throughout.

annulus is white, highly membranous, with yellowing around the tips.

Spores are approx 6um x 2um, rounded to globular in shape, rough ornamentation.

Description

This cladonia, is a coastal species, that does not form conspicuous cups. It is a tall, unbranching cladonia, with very small apothecia at the tips of the branches. It grows strongly grouped, to the point where individual podetia tie together to make a mat of sorts. it was found in the transition zone between the coastal grasses, and forested area.

Description

This foliose lichen is one of the most conspicious you can find. it's highly ridged top, and spotted underside are hard to miss, especially given it's likeness to lung tissue. with close inspection, there are cephalodia on the upper surface, making this one of the interesting tripartate lichens. when this specime was found, it was laying on the ground in the parking lot under conifers.

Description

This lichen was found attache to what was most likely a conifer twig that had fallen to the ground. it has a typical green-white color, with hints of sky blue and gray on the topside. The underside is patched with brown, black and white patches. There is a central holdfast, and it is isidiate at the margins and on the topsides near the margins.

Description

This lichen was found on a North facing drainage ditch on the side of the road. it is isidiate around the margins, and slightly tormentose, not glabrose. Rhizines are of varying length, short and sparse around the margins, long internally. The length varies form about 2.5mm to about 2 cm.

Description

This peltigera was found on the ground growing around a large clump of moss and some Suillius flavidus. The haitat of this lichen was highly coastal, with lots of salty rain coming in most nights. Defining features are low, broad veins, with short rhizines (approx 5mm). near the margins, the veins are so low and broad they can only be distinguished from the underside by a slight difference in coloration (the veins are an orange-bown.) The upper surface dried a gray to brown color.

This classic looking cladonia is a true representative of why the Genusis called "Pixie cups" these are small to large cup lichens, with squamules at the base becoming sorediate after the first eighth of the height of the podetia. the inside of the cups are highly sorediate, with coarse, granular soredia. primary thalli are squamulose. all podetia are hollow.

This lichen was found growing on hardwoods, on The Evergreen State College campus. there are numerous apothecia on the margins of the growth zone. it is characterized by its punctured, highly elongate lobes, with about thee to four branching points. it has a very bushy form when wet, but tends to become appressed to the substrate and itself when dried.

Description

This fruticose lichen is conspicious because of its rich branching with slightly flattened lobes. There is a clear distinction between lower and upper cortex, due to the lower cortex being a lighter white color. The upper surface is a dull light green color, with little to no difference in color along the ridges.

Description

This highly branched Usnea was found growing on a hardwood twig on the Evergreen State College campus. it has copious branching, and a white central cord. Brittle to the touch when dry, but very soft and spongey when wet. Each individual thallus is attached at a central holdfast, from where all the rest of the thallus branches out dichotomously.
