What

Mallard × Muscovy Duck (Anas platyrhynchos × Cairina moschata)

Observer

Date

Description

It resembles a mallard duck, but the colouration is not mottled, as both the adults and juvenile mallard ducks are. I thought it could also be a hybrid, but was not able to identify it using online bird keys.

Domestic Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos var. domesticus)

Description

There was only one domestic duck in the pond, but the pond mostly had mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and Paradise shelducks (Tadorna variegata).

This could perhaps have been a result of translocation, when it was owned as a chick then deposited in the pond. It was quite friendly toward people.

Vocal, active, hopping around in a large tree in Woodhaugh gardens, Dunedin. Seemed to be packing at tree trunk. Alone, but others heard in tree canopy nearby.
