What
Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides)Observer
tjesselDescription
Uncommon. Notable to me for growth on disturbed trail berm.
What
Abrupt Digger Bee (Anthophora abrupta)Observer
tjesselDescription
This animal is building a nest in a cob wall (straw and mud, a type of adobe) in a community garden in my neighborhood. As you can see, the wall is riddled with similar excavations.
What
Southern Zigzag Salamander (Plethodon ventralis)Observer
tjesselDescription
This one was under about 6 to 8 inches of soil in a cultivated garden. I had not touched the garden soil since last March, and was turning it over mid March. I found another of the same species nearby under some very old, rotting landscape Timbers. It is not uncommon to find multiples of these animals in disturbed clay soil on my property, particularly in mid to late winter. They also can be found under logs, old shingles, and in (cold) compost piles.

What
Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron)Observer
tjesselDescription
Grows in the cracks of masonry on steps of circa 1938 house. There are other spleenworts on the property; unsure if these are same species. There is essentially no water source other than rain.
What
Catalpas (Genus Catalpa)Observer
tjesselDescription
A seedling on an area I disturbed. Unsure if this is a catalpa or a princess tree seedling.
What
Common Pawpaw (Asimina triloba)Observer
tjesselDescription
Just want to add this is not “officially” in cultivation, it is a volunteer seedling in my yard, probably an F1 seedling of intentionally planted paw paw about 50 feet away (I.e., not a clone from established trees).
