We have no idea what this would be--maybe some sort of algae. They were highly abundant covering the base substrate in a beaver pond underwater near the shore, and had the resemblance of moose pellets. Any ideas?

I've never known what this is, and I'm curious. It's growing on a sunny limy outcrop above Lake Champlain. iNaturalist recommends Nostoc commune, so we'll start there with a cyanobacteria.
