What
Sweetleaf (Symplocos tinctoria)Observer
will21Description
Crown damaged last year from wind-thrown red oaks. Area was burned 2/23/24.
Also wanting to make an observation for the yellow growths that appear to be some kind of gall. Other nearby Sweetleaf without crown damage and untouched by fire show no such growths.

What
Meadow Voles (Genus Microtus)Observer
will21Description
Found rummaging through leaf litter and wood chip flower bed in background, next to house. Adjacent habitats are closed-canopy pines, oak-pine-hickory north-slopes, and ~3 acres of pasture being restored to savanna.
Never before encountered this rodent species. Woodland vole seems most likely, but also looks very similar to prairie vole and southern bog lemming.
If encountered again, measurements will be taken of feet and tail, and closer images taken of teeth.
