What

Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus)

Observer

yewefsew

Date

August 13, 2013

Description

No photo. It came to it's recorded call and was a sharply-marked male, with solid dark back and a distinct white jugal line. The habitat was an open ponderosa pine stand with a grass understory (pinegrass). The forest also had mature larches as a sub-dominant tree. Sapling grandfir and dougfir indicated the next succession. The Whitman National Forest has marked spaces in the area as "old growth" and "Managed for Woodpeckers".
