Description

This is the only specimen of this plant I have ever seen, and I am familiar with most in this area. I've watched it for several years and it is spreading, apparently from the roots, underneath a couple of large white oaks, a black gum and a sweet gum. Bumblebees love it. Throughout the flowering period, most of the yellow blooms stay closed up in a tube. As soon as they open, the tips begin to turn brown. The flower tubes are no larger than the tip of my pinkie finger. When they first appear, they have tinges of orange. The tallest plant is about four feet. Most of the branches cascade out rather than grow upright.
