Purple Olive Snail (Callianax biplicata)

Description

Olivella biplicata. These snails are common on sandy bottoms and protected bays. Someone how I've never noticed them in Pillar Point Harbor, but there were swarms of them this morning, plowing through the sand just beneath the surface.

I'm curious about that weird bit of flesh that extends up along the shell from where the siphon emerges. What is that thing?
