Description

You can see a salamander in the center of the photo. The site is a hand dug well that is usually dry.

**The original ID was based largely on location. It is on the Berry Creek side of a surface drainage divide separating Salado and San Gabriel watersheds. I updated the ID based on recent genetic studies.
I initially thought it was a gravid female but I have never seen one so full of eggs (like a tiger salamander). I think this individual was gorged on food after taking advantage of the abundance of invertebrates, including groundwater amphipods (genus Stygobromus). At least two other individuals were present but not visible in the photo.
