The Black-cheeked Woodpecker (Centurus pucherani) occurs on the Atlantic slope of S. E. Mexico to the Honduras and south to Ecuador. The individual shown here was photographed on December 17, 1999, at Chan Chich Lodge near Gallon Jug, Belize. The bird was taking advantage of an abundant supply of oranges near our cabana. The bird would poke a hole into the orange then return to lap up the juice with its long tongue.
