This group of Californian Sea Lions are resting on Pier 39 of San Francisco's Embarcadero.

The male sea lion lifting his flipper into the air is thermoregulating. In other words, he is lifting his flipper into the air so that he can dissipate excess body heat accrued over the last few hours of resting under intense sunlight.
