The federally listed Johnston's frankenia is a less than 30 cm tall shrub (about 1ft) with narrow opposite leaves, small white 5-petaled flowers, and has reddish leaves and stems in winter. Many locations of Johnston's frankenia occur over very salty soils where little else, including buffel grass, can thrive.
