Claret Pondhawk
Erythemis mithroides
male
Santa Ana N.W.R.,
Hidalgo Co., Texas
9 June 2009
This is a very rare species in the U.S., with perhaps 10 or so total records, all in deep south Texas. Despite the range described on the data page as not including south Texas, the species has been documented there for 6 or 7 years. Specimen material has been examined by Paulson, Abbott and others and compared to this species and confirmed. See page 438 of Paulson's "Dragonflies and Damselflies of the West" for more information. There may be a taxon revision in the future to describe this as another species, but for now it is considered to be E. mithroides.
