What

Hispaniolan Giant Ameiva (Pholidoscelis chrysolaemus)

Observer

Date

March 9, 2013

Description

Fast moving large lizard, dark skin with greenish/yellow spots on top and sides that fade to bluish on lower sides. Approx. 8-10 inches long, maybe a little more. Was scurrying among the brush, in a sandy area near an undeveloped beach.
I was told they were called "lucios" here in the DR but that seems to be a local name.

They seem to climb trees but dig caves to live in.
