This project is a follow up to the data point contest established at the 50th Joint Annual Meeting (JAM) of the Arizona chapter of the Wildlife Society, the New Mexico chapter of the Wildlife Society, and the Arizona/New Mexico Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.
To enter a photo in this competition, submit a record to this iNaturalist project by 9 am on Friday February 2nd. All project records must be for non-captive animals observed in either Arizona or New Mexico.
Winners will be selected for each of three "Data Point" categories by a panel of judges - not general conference attendees. Images will be judged based on the quality of the photograph and the scientific/conservation value of the data point.
In the "Rare Birds & Stranger Things" category, images will be evaluated based on the quality of the image and the potential value of the record toward species conservation. Images of species included on either Arizona or New Mexico’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) lists are appropriate for this category. It is worth noting that Arizona “1C” species records are of high value since this designation suggests that current data may be insufficient for accurate evaluation of conversation status.
In the "Keeping Common Species Common" category, images will be evaluated based on the quality of the image and the potential value of the record toward the management of common species. Images of common native species considered “secure” or of “least concern” in Arizona or New Mexico are appropriate for this category.
In the "Invasive Procedures & Feral Terrors" category, images will be evaluated based on the quality of the image and the potential value of the record toward the management of invasive species. Images of non-native species in Arizona or New Mexico are appropriate for this category.
All required iNaturalist fields (category, idetification, location, photo) must be completed.
This is a stand-alone competition and has no bearing on the JAM print Photo contest.
