One Monarch Butterfly Sitting in a Tree!

As I was hiking with a tail of 1st graders from Hoover Elementary yesterday, all our senses were tuned in to finding animals who use Middle Harbor as a habitat. Hence our theme for the day, "Everything Needs a Habitat!" We were walking down the path and to our right about eye level I spotted a flash of orange on one of the Torrey Pine Trees! What was this? A monarch butterfly nestled in the long needles of this coastal pine! Hmmm? Will more come? Is this one just passing by? I wonder if a monarch spots a new prime habitat for it's species how it can let all it's brothers and sisters know? We'll just have to wait and see if through the years more monarchs discover this little park.

About

Middle Harbor Shoreline Park is a 38 acre shoreline park located within the Port of Oakland. Though this park is surrounded by urban development, it is rich in diversity. Once this park served as part of the Navy Supply Depot during WWII and now it has been restored with wetlands, walking pathways and areas where SF native dune plants can find a place to take root.
