What

Southern Flying Squirrel Glaucomys volans

Observer

Date

Description

We have a 30m+ tall pecan tree next to our house in the hardwood bottomland forest in sw Tennessee.
During our latest unusual cold spell (down to 17F for several days), we had many birds and mammals come in close to eat on our seeds and suet feeders.
We were visited by between 1 and 3 flying squirrels each evening, eating off the suet and darting about extremely quickly (3x faster than squirrels).
The photos were taken at a distance with a flash, next to a 6x6" suet cage, which shows how small they are.

Description

Hackberry Woolly Aphid (Shivaphis celti) sometimes called Asian woolly hackberry aphid.

In this area of Shelby Forest, there has been a severe infestation of these exotic pests. They have infected every single Hackberry tree in our area, causing the leaves to turn black, and also causing any plants, etc. under the tree to turn black (from mold due to the drippings from the leaves; i.e. sap and aphid excrement).

These aphids were accidentally introduced from Asia.
