Peregrine Falcon/raptor kills:
If you find a bird that you suspect was a PF/raptor kill, please follow the same protocol as a building strike bird (iNaturalist data entry adding it to the BirdSafeSTL project, carcass card and photos and data entry into the Excel file on the shared Google drive). Indicate you think it is a PF/raptor kill in the notes section of the observation page in the iNaturalist application and when you do the data entry into the Excel file on the shared Google drive. This data will be shared with WBS as a way to indicate where Peregrine Falcon activity is occurring in downtown St. Louis.
Stunned birds:
If you find a bird that is stunned/alive also follow the same protocol as a bird found dead after a likely building/window strike. If possible, do get a photo of the bird. If it flies away when you approach (a good thing), then just get as much information as possible from what you saw and write it on a carcass card, and take a photo of the ...more ↓

Stunned birds:
If you find a bird that is stunned/alive also follow the same protocol as a bird found dead after a likely building/window strike. If possible, do get a photo of the bird. If it flies away when you approach (a good thing), then just get as much information as possible from what you saw and write it on a carcass card, and take a photo of the card and a “context” photo to indicate where the bird likely struck the building and continue to include this as a iNaturalist observation and as part of the BirdSafeSTL project filling out the building name/address, side of building and if it is an incidental observation.
If it is stunned and easily captured (not mobile), move it to a safer nearby location (such as under vegetation, in shade, in a quieter low traffic area). Still fill out a carcass card and include a context picture, a picture of the carcass card and a picture of the bird (separate pictures of bird and carcass card is fine – don’t need to further stress the bird by placing a carcass card next to it) with your iNaturalist observation and add that observation to the BirdSafeSTL project. When you add the observation to the BirdSafeSTL project, you will need to include the building name/address, side of building and if it is an incidental observation. If you feel the bird has an injury that requires further attention, please follow the guidelines provided in the protocol for rescuing birds through Wild Bird Rehabilitation.
Stunned birds are still birds that likely struck a building, so that data is as important as birds that are killed after impacting glass or a building.
