This project was started in 2013 and its aim is to identify the bat species and distribution of bats within The Catlins region and promote their conservation.
I have set up annual Long-tailed Bat monitoring surveys using several transect routes across the region. These are carried out by local volunteers.
Spot monitoring of bat use of locations has been undertaken at all times of the year. Current and historic reported sightings are also being recorded. To date only Chalinolobus tuberculatus has been recorded currently active in the region. More records are welcomed.
It is hoped that more intensive monitoring can be carried out soon to establish some roost locations and estimate population size and territory use. At present the population appears to be isolated from other known populations.
