Guide to photographing mussels

Mussels can sometimes be difficult to identify even in hand and with only a photograph it proves to be even more difficult. Having a photograph that shows all of the important characteristics for identification is highly important. The following document has detailed information on how to take good photographs.

Thank you Mr. Howells (via Marsha May) for this great and needed document. If I might make a small contribution on the technical side. Expanding on the statement " Photo quality of 300 dpi may be needed in publications, but 75-150 dpi is often sufficient for identification. Photo size of 5-10 inches (longest axis) is often acceptable; there is no reason to send email photo attachments of 3-5 feet wide!" - Normally dpi refers to the printing and not the cameras quality. Photos don't really have a size in inches until printed or displayed but the point is well taken. Just as an FYI, a 3.1 Megapixel camera (a setting of ~1600x1200) will produce pretty close to a dot per pixel match at 300 dpi on a 10 inch document. In other words, to avoid attaching images that would produce billboard size prints at 300 dpi, one can set the cameras resolution to around 3.1 Megapixels and achieve efficient transfer of information online. The great thing to know here is that one can expect to get more that than the needed detail out of most any smartphone. For a more complete explanation (or in case I have confused things) on how these two things work together, check out this page - http://www.microscope-microscope.org/imaging/image-resolution.htm

FYI - The link to the photography document above gets a 401 error. This link works (as of 30 Dec 2016):

Thanks, billdodd. for the refresh. I had not realized the link did not work as I have a copy from a TPWD course. It is good to have the corrected post, especially after some time has passed.
