Taxonomic notes: Gastrotheca ernestoi was revalidated by Caramaschi and Rodrigues (2007) based on morphological features.

Gastrotheca ernestoi can be found in the Serra dos Órgãos, but extends to the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira, in the southern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Caramaschi and Rodrigues, 2007).

No population status is available for this species.

Gastrotheca ernestoi is an inhabitant of the Atlantic rain forest. It occurs in sympatry with Gastrotheca albolineata and Gastrotheca fulvorufa at Serra dos Órgãos (Caramaschi and Rodrigues, 2007).

Listed as Data Deficient since it has only recently been revalidated, and there is still very little information on its extent of occurrence, status and ecological requirements.
