Welcome to the Monarch Monitoring Project for the Rio Grande River in New Mexico

The Monarch butterfly (Danus plexippus) extensively uses Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge along the Rio Grande. It has been hypothesized that the monarch uses rivers as migratory corridors and uses adjacent land for resources.

Observations of any and all life stage of the monarch (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly) throughout the year will be very useful as we learn more about monarch butterflies within the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico.
