Is this instead a dog whelk - Nucella lapillus?

During the week of March 30th, large numbers of these suddenly came to the high tide zone and congregated on large boulders. I assume laying eggs?

On flowering red maple trees. There were about three per tree... On edge of a Douglas fir forest next to a small orchard not yet flowering. First bee sighting of the season.

Image taken via stereoscope. Mites were on cacoons of blue orchard bees as I was harvesting them for storage for the winter. The mites seemed to be feeding on left over pollen. The bees were originally purchased through mail order company...

"Chaetodactylus krombeini is the typical mite associated with Osmia lignaria. The phoretic deutonymphs in the pictures look very swollen and ready to molt to tritonymphs and begin feeding on the oollen.
