Palmyra Atoll contains substantial Rainforest habitat on its various islands. Many plants and animals invaded the terrestrial system, especially after the atoll was used by the US military during WWII. However, restoration of the Atoll is underway. Notably, rats were eradicated in 2011 to help protect breeding seabirds. And Coconut palms (planted for copra) are being removed.
This project is intended to document the atoll's biodiversity, as well as support a field guide for to help visitors identify biodiversity.
The Biodiversity “Project” For Palmyra Atoll is organized by habitat and includes four components: Reefs, Lagoon and flats, Offshore, and Forest.
