SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California Resort is hosting a BioBlitz, Snapshot Cal Coast, at Swami's State Beach in Encinitas. Ocean conservation is a key part of SEA LIFE Aquarium. Humans have decided to protect about 13% of our planet’s land; yet, only 0.5% of the world’s oceans are protected. The entire California coast is protected by a network of Marine Protected Areas or MPAs. Marine Protected Areas are like National parks, but they protect the underwater habitats from destruction and overfishing. These protected areas provide a safe place for animals to raise their young. The choices we make everyday can have a worldwide impact.
Bioblitzes are a way for groups of people to document biodiversity in one place at one time. We are going to record observations of plants and animals in Swami’s Beach tide pools, by taking pictures with smartphones or digital cameras and then uploading those photos to iNaturalist. We have a list and pictures of a few species that we are particularly interested in, but our goal is to document as many species as possible.

We are documenting local species diversity to increase our knowledge of our ocean. With this data, scientists can determine long-term trends of a species. And also because it is fun and allows us to experience the species we share our earth with. Plus, each registered attendee will receive a free tote bag and SEA LIFE Aquarium ticket*!
