Bernalillo County manages 13 Open Space properties (1000 acres) from the mountains to the valley that surround the Albuquerque metropolitan area. This dynamic network of properties encompass important natural and cultural resources managed to benefit people, plants and wildlife. Bernalillo County engages local citizen scientists through the Master Naturalist program to observe and document phenological and other natural occurrences to the plant and animal communities through iNaturalist and related projects. Help contribute to this project by recording your own observations at these properties using iNaturalist!
Bernalillo County is working with the University of New Mexico on the preservation and enhancement of the North Golf Course. In 2012, the county secured a long-term conservation easement on the course in exchange for contributing $1.5 million toward improvement of the irrigation and community trail systems around the course. The Golf Course has functioned as de facto urban open space for wildlife, adjacent neighborhoods and the university community for decades. Recent improvements have curb water usage on the course significantly and formalize the informal trail system for the community with a soft surface trail, benches and landscaping.
